To All Parents By Edgar A. Guest “I’ll lend you a little child of Mine.” He said. “For you to love the while he lives and mourn for when he’s dead. It may be six or seven years, or twenty-two or three, But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for Me? He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief You’ll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief. “I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn. I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true And from the throngs that crowd life’s lane’s I’ve selected you. Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain, Nor hate Me when I come to call to take him back again?” I fancied that I heard them say: “Dear Lord, Thy will be done.” For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run. We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’’ love him while we may And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay; But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned. We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.” |

Has it really been all these years Since we shed those first tears? The note I read standing in the hall. The disbelief of that phone call. That long ride saying no, no, no. Why, oh why, did you have to go. Family and friends came from near and far To hear the silence of that bass guitar. The resounding music of “Ode To Joy”. Words spoken that recalled you as a boy. The Generals five were now four, Flip who made them laugh was no more. He stood in the pulpit fighting the tears, As he recalled your wit over the years. She came with a reading to help us know That it made no sense that you had to go. He told tales about you at the store Painting your picture with words and more. Oh, so many stories that were told, Of your love and heart of gold So many pictures that were seen Of you as a man and as a teen. So much time has now gone But our memories of you live on and on. Jason:
Thanks so much for adding the music to Phil’s page. It means a lot to both Anna and I. “Ode to Joy” was played by a good friend of Phil’s at his memorial service. Although Phil was a “Rock” bass player we found out from his band members that this classical piece was his favorite.

Thank you to Ren and Anna for your generosity in donating money to a scholarship fund in honor of your son, Philip Michael Cherven. It has been such a blessing for me and other students to receive financial support during our college years. And because of this, more people share in the memory of your beloved son than ever before. May you both be blessed.

Thinking of Flip, this year and every year. It doesn’t seem possible that so many years have slipped by …

‘Though 20 years passed in the blink of an eye, Flip is always in my heart … and his family and friends remain in my thoughts.
Flip, I think of you and I smile. If only you’d stayed around to give us more grins!
